Bluefin tuna prices 9% higher than on same period last year

The average CIF price of fresh bluefin (Thunnus thynnus, Thunnus orientalis and Thunnus maccoyi) imported by Japan in March was JPY 1,920/kg, 12% higher than last month and 19% higher than March 2018. In the first quarter of the year it averages JPY 1,824 / kg, 9% more than in the same period of the previous year.

The main suppliers in the month were Republic of Korea, with 67 tonnes at JPY 350/kg, Taiwan, with 74 tonnes at JPY 943/kg and Australia, with 100 tonnes at JPY 1,643/kg.

Markets

In March, 524 tonnes of fresh bluefin were imported for a value at Japanese customs of JPY 1,006 million.

These figures are up 3% in volume and 16% in value on those registered in the previous month. In relation to March last year imports grew 16% in volume and 19% in value.

In the first quarter of the year 1,463 tonnes were imported for JPY 2,668 million, 6% more in volume and 15% in value than in the same period last year.

The main supplier of Northern bluefin (Thunnus thynnus and / or Thunnus orientalis) in the quarter was Republic of Korea with 230 tonnes and JPY 441 million.

The origin of fresh Southern bluefin (Thunnus maccoyii) came from the Republic of Korea (124 tonnes), Taiwan (282 tonnes) and Australia (120 tonnes).
