The size of farmed fish in aquaculture is important information that determines the amount of feed and the time of landing. However, at the time of size measurement, it was necessary to manually specify the measurement points one by one while frame-by-frame moving the captured image in the cage, which made working efficiency and measurement accuracy an issue.

Toyota Tsusho Co., Ltd. and NEC Corporation (NEC) have jointly developed an automated aquaculture fish size measurement service for Yokota, a young bluefin tuna fish, and are a fully-cultivated bluefin tuna breeding company of the Toyota Tsusho Group. They started operations at the company Tuna Dream Goto and Tuna Dream Okinawa Co., Ltd.

With the cooperation of Tuna Dream Goto and Tuna Dream Okinawa farms, this service utilizes Toyota Tsusho's expertise in yokowa aquaculture and NEC's AI and IoT technology. It is an improvement of the developed aquaculture fish size measurement automation service develop in 2018.

Specifically, in the conventional service, bluefin tuna was only targeted at adult fish of 60 cm or more, but with this service the measurement target size was expanded to 20 cm or more and the fish shape recognition accuracy of Yokowa, a young bluefin tuna fish, was improved, achieved more accurate measurement accuracy in size measurement.

Through this service, the amount of feed and the time of landing can be determined based on more accurate information, which can be expected to improve the productivity of the aquaculture industry.

Going forward, Toyota Tsusho and NEC will promote efforts toward the sustainable supply of marine resources by utilizing AI and IoT technologies in the fisheries industry, and aim for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) goal 14 set by the United Nations. Conserve the ocean and marine resources for sustainable development and use them in a sustainable manner. "
