Norway is sending weekly consignments of fresh salmon to the UK by sea in under 48 hours, Fish Farming Expert’s sister site Kyst.no reported.

The first cargo of salmon was loaded by farmer Bremnes Seashore aboard the Vega Vela on Monday evening, after being harvested in the morning, and was due to arrive in London today.

On October 20, through a free webinar open to all audiences, the collaborative initiative led by AquaGen, Blue Genomics, Blumar, Camanchaca, Centrovet, Cermaq, Pharmaq and Skretting will make a good practices manual available to the industry.

The Pincoy project, which seeks to reduce the use of antibiotics in the salmon farming industry by implementing high sanitary and animal welfare standards, as well as operational excellence throughout the production chain, will hold a webinar where it will present a manual of good practices that will be made available to Chilean industry.

This Tuesday, September 22, the delegate of the Free Zone David Regades and the president of Conxemar, José Luís Freire presented the report on the frozen seafood sector, which highlights that, as a whole, the companies in the sector generated in 2018 a gross added value of 1,614 million euros compared to the 1,549 million created in 2017 by these same companies. Conxemar associates are responsible for 55.63% of the wealth generated by the sector in 2018.

This report, which has been prepared for the fourth consecutive year, includes data from the last available fiscal year (2018) and reflects that 652 companies make up the industry and marketing in Spain (frozen and preserved), companies that jointly billed 15,148 million euros and generated 31,197 direct jobs.

More than half of them had operating margins of less than one per-cent last year.

It’s nearing the end of September, and still, not all of the country’s exporters of salmon and trout have delivered their annual accounts. That itself is a sign of weakness. SalmonBusiness has studied the financial statements of 23 companies operating in the export segment. And it doesn’t make an uplifting read.

12 of the companies in the sample had less than one per-cent operating margin. Five of them lost money last year.

A new plant opened in Murmansk represents the latest in fish processing technology, designed to work with either fresh or seafrozen groundfish. The Murman Seafood plant is the latest to be completed under the Russian government’s investment quotas initiative.

Icelandic company Valka acted as both the designer of the sophisticated factory and the main contractor, delivering trimming lines and an automated waterjet cutter for pinbone removal and portioning, as well as various graders, packing equipment and Manufacturing Execution Software.

U.K. supermarket chain Asda Stores Ltd. has determined that sustainability improvements need to be made across its seafood supply chain, with a new independent report finding that some of its best-selling capture-fisheries products may be putting marine mammals, sharks, seabirds, and sea turtles at risk.

Walmart-owned Asda, the second-largest supermarket chain in the United Kingdom, is the country’s first multiple retailer to assess the impacts of its seafood business on ocean wildlife.

Skretting Italy has launched the new range of carbon neutral aquafeeds, called Feed4Future.

Food production accounts for around a quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, and the new range recognises the considerable opportunity to minimise the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions generated by the aquaculture feed production process and the fish farming sector.

Tavish Scott, the long serving politician and former leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, is to be the new chief executive of the Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organisation (SSPO), it was announced today.

Scott, who retired from frontline politics in 2019 after representing Shetland since the start of devolution in 1999, replaces Julie Hesketh-Laird, who was in the post for two and a half years.

He brings a wealth of knowledge of salmon farming, having championed the sector’s interests in his constituency for many years.
